Upgrade your analog Tele Aid to digital!
Due to the recently revised Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, analog wireless systems are no longer required to be maintained. Since Mercedes Tele Aid was using this platform, all vehicles that were operating on this system must now be upgraded to digital in order to continue service.
Wireless providers are phasing out the analog service, making it obsolete by December 31, 2007.
Affected are all Model Year 2000-2004 vehicles, Model Year 2005 M-Class, G Class, Maybach vehicles up to Model Year 2006, and all SLR vehicles.
In order to avoid interrupted service, the equipment must be updated. This conversion requires a new (digital) control module and the installation/activation by your Mercedes Benz dealer. You will need to determine the length of your expected term of ownership.
Available packages:
- 1 year Tele Aid subscription with digital upgrade for $824 + installation (includes $100 mail-in rebate).
- 2 year Tele Aid subscription with digital upgrade is $1148 + installation (includes $200 mail-in rebate).
- Lifetime Tele Aid subscription that is active the entire term of your ownership. This subscription/digital conversion is a one-time expense of $1500 + installation.
Installation times vary slightly per model, but normally take between 2-3 hours and will be activated at time of installation. For more information, call your local Mercedes dealer or visit: Mercedes Benz Tele Aid FAQ
If you live in the Maryland Tri-state area and are interested in upgrading your Tele Aid to the new Digital system, call our service department at 1-866-508-8690.

My question is why does it cost so much to convert the Tel Aid system to digital when I have heard from sources that to convert the On Star system to digital costs less than $100. Seems to me it must be just the name - Mercedes.

Carl, you got me thinking so I thought I would do some research.
OnStar did take some preventive measures a little earlier in the game by switching over to a Analog/Digital-Ready system. BUT this system is no fully digital.
-->> Analog/Digital-Ready: OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog/digital-ready equipment operate on the analog cellular network, but can be upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment if available for that vehicle. Beginning January 1, 2008, OnStar service will not be available on these vehicles unless the OnStar equipment has been upgraded to dual-mode (analog/digital) equipment. > Program cost - If your GM vehicle with analog/digital-ready OnStar equipment has an active OnStar subscription you will receive an equipment upgrade, including parts and labor, for only $15* with the purchase of a 1-year Safe & Sound subscription at $289*. A Directions & Connections subscription is also available if you prefer.
Vehicles that activated OnStar subscriptions on or after February 20, 2007 will be charged an additional $100* activation fee. > OnStar-equipped vehicles with analog-only equipment were designed to operate only on the analog cellular network and there is no digital upgrade available. Vehicles with this equipment will no longer be able to receive OnStar services beginning January 1, 2008. <--
It's hard to compare apples to apples when upgrading the 2 systems. I agree with you, it isn't cheap to upgrade your Mercedes Analog Tele aid to Digital but at least Mercedes does provide the option unlike OnStar.
I hope this helps shed some light on the upgrade comparison of Onstar VS Tele Aid.

Still, as far as I am concerned, it doesn't justify the price. Especially when I look at what we have always been showered with about how great and durable a Mercedes is. I could give you heart burn listing the many problems we encountered with our first Mercedes, a D300. Motor mounts, transmission, and on and on. Then the expense of just normal servicing is unbelievable. Yes, there is no doubt that they ride and handle excellent, but so do many more now. Also we could naturally have selected a different make/brand of auto, but wanted to give Mercedes another try, plus a Mercedes has always been my wife's longtime dream. So when we traded for our 320 we were sure that things would be better and maybe less expensive. Wrong. Oh Well. Guess that's life. Just wonder what her next vehicle will be. Doubt it will be another M-B.

I had to spend several hundred dollars a few months ago to upgrade my 2002 Mercedes S500's analog internal phone system to a digital. Actually, the dealership tried to charge/gouge me around $1,000 for this service by telling me that I would have to replace the wiring inside my car. I found out through self research on the internet that all I needed to buy from this same dealership was a $350 puck that would receive my phone's bluetooth signal. The dealership never shared this information with me, even though they had the puck in their inventory! Now I receive a mailing stating that my Tele-Aid system is also about to become defunct! My local Mercedes dealer would again like to gouge me for almost $700 in parts, plus $300 for the installation! Instead of taking care of their customers, Mercedes Benz is instead trying to capitalize from a bad situation in which they were the cause by knowingly allowing outdated equipment to be installed in their newer model vehicles. None of this seems legal to me.. I did a google seach tonight on the subject and found a CA lawyer that is conducting a class action law suit. I signed up and am anxious to hear what he has to say about all this.

The CA lawyer called me today at my business and wanted my input. She said that they are compiling information to proceed with this case. They know that the Tele-Aid system will be cut off shortly and realize that they will have to make the case happen soon in order to help their clients. She requested that I fax a copy of my letter from Tele Aid for them to review. It sounds as if they are gong to be aggressive with this litigation.

what is the part number of this $350 puck that would receive your phone's bluetooth signal? I would like to purchase it for my 2001 CLK 320.
Posted by: Edward | October 05, 2007 at 07:34 PM
The bluetooth puck's purpose is to make your vehicle bluetooth compatible with your cell phone. The cell phone and tele-aid are 2 separate systems and by upgrading one, does not in any way affect the other. Unfortunately, in order to continue service through tele-aid, the control module itself needs to be replaced in order to accept and properly process the new digital signal.

Ron Would you please share the info of that Ca Attorney as I am facing this conversion on my S 500 and I was quoted 1700 dollars plus installation fee of about 2 hours labor. Just seems incredible expensive when I did research and googled for conversion updates it looks like the going fee for non Mercedes parts are around 380 dollars. So I would love to know what make MB charge that much more.

I just purchased a Certified Pre-Owned 2004 E320 from a MB Dealer in Encino. I was NOT informed that the Tele-Aid was obsolete and that I would need to invest over $1000 to upgrade, nor was it even discussed with me, unfortunately I just ASSumed it would be up to date and workable since this IS A MERCEDES, a "World Class" automobile. I am not at all amused by this. Also, anyone know how I can by-pass that expensive "MB authorized phone" and upgrade the system to use my Verizon Blackberry 8830? Thanks!

I just purchased a 2008 E350. Did the dealer tell me it had Bluetooth? Oh yes, of course it does. Then when the man tells me about all the conveniences I find it will cost me another $400 to be able to actually use the Bluetooth. Should have purchased a Toyota which worked right away for nothing.

Scott, that really bites that the sale person did not let you know that the 2004 was not updated with the new teleaid. But then again, im sure he did not do this on purpose. I'm sure it has been a mess for Mercedes and for the dealers to keep up with. From the consumers point of view it seems easy but it's not always. If a dealer traded in the 2004 at an above market value then would have to turn around and spend another $1,000 plus to upgrade the teleaid on top of the discount im sure you received, the dealer would not make any profit. I do agree that the dealers need to be sure that their sales staff are aware of the situation for the older Mercedes and be sure that customers are aware that the teleaid is not functional.
Emily, you are right. TeleAid and the Bluetooth module are completely different from each other and provide to 2 different capabilities. As far as im concerned, up grading to the new teleaid is almost pointless for communication features that cell phones and other much cheaper services don't already provide. About the only feature I think one would be missing out on is having the ability for the vehicle to call the tele-aid operator when an air bag has been deployed.
Technology changes and it stinks when older technology becomes obsolete, but it happens! And remember, don't be so quick to blame Mercedes for this since it was the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruled in November 2002 that wireless carriers will no longer be required to support the analog wireless network as of January 2008."

I too am becoming dis-enchanted with Mercedes. Yes my ML320 runs beautifully, but since the original warranty has expired, I've noticed a change in the service I received at my local dealer, even though I purchased an extended warranty. First, they won't cover the clear coat peeling that is happening on the rear columns (the black part on the sides of the tailgate), even though we purchased the 5 year Simonize coverage and are still under the coverage period. Now, they also no longer want to honor the "A" and "B" service at no charge, which we were told we would receive as long as we owned the vehicle. They no longer guarantee a loner car when you book service, it is strictly first come, first served for that. And now, TeleAid. If the FCC made the ruling in 2002, why would MB continue to install the outdated systems in vehicles as new as 2006? Ours is a 2003, and quite honestly, I think the least they could do is install the upgrade at no cost under the extended warranty. After all, it's not my fault it will no longer operate after 1/1/08. That was one of the major reasons we bought our Mercedes, for the automatic call when airbags are deployed. We never use it for anything else, and I hope I won't ever need to either, but for peace of mind. I could easily use my cellphone for everything, except perhaps if I were in an accident and were not able to make a call. What will the value of my vehicle drop to if I don't upgrade? A lot, in my opinion. That's like saying I have a car to sell you, but the hi-tech stereo system doesn't work, but I can fix it for an additional $1,500. Who want a nice car and still have to invest $$ to have everything work? I wished I had known about the TeleAid a few months ago, before I spent $$$$ on 4 tires, brakes all around, and "B" service. I would have traded it for a Saturn Vue, perhaps..........

I have a 2001 SLK 320 with a defunct analog tele aid system. Just recently after starting my car, a startling loud voice comes through the car speakers from American Roaming Network that I have an unregistered phone---whatever that means. This pre-recorded message loops multiple times, even after turning off the car engine. It's driving me nuts. Anyone know why this has started in August 2008 and what to do about it?

We have had onstar on several cars and they do offer a upgrade to digital but it has to be I believe a 2004 or newer. I know this is a FACT because we did the upgrade on our 2004 cadillac sts. We just bought a 05 s430. I hope we can get tele aid to work. I know we had it on a older s series and it didnt work nearly as well as onstar. Onstar is awesome. I hope the newer car works better!

2003 E320 Teleaid will cost $1,500.00 plus to upgrade. I am retired and my car is paid off. Who ever thought I would have to upgrade to digital Teleaid. Analog works and is used by many carries as a fail over for digital. I am very disappointed with Mercedes.

Since I have the original tele aid system and it now obsolete, can I now get the tele aid malfunction error off. Every time I start the car it defaults to the the malfunction message. The dealer told me also there was nothing they could do over a year ago. I have no intention to upgrade.
